Sheryl Crow Releases "Wouldn't Want To Be Like You" With St. Vincent
She may be 10 albums and nine GRAMMY wins into a successful career as a genre-bending country artist, but with the release of her latest single, "Wouldn't Want To Be Like You" with St. Vincent (under her real name Annie Clark), Sheryl Crow shows she still has plenty of tricks up her sleeve.
The crossover, foot-thumping-worthy track focuses on what Crow told Billboard is "the climate of truth not being important anymore." Crow also solicited St. Vincent as the perfect addition to the track, saying, "I called her and said, 'I am dying to have you bring your St. Vincent-ness to this.'" The response was a hearty "F*** yeah," and the rest is history,
Another factor making Crow's new release unique is the distribution platform she chose. She engaged a platform called Stem, a 2015 start-up company that allows artists to distribute their content across a variety of platforms while tracking their earnings and performance on one seamless platform. It's a modern way of releasing music that can benefit artists such as Crow, Frank Ocean and Childish Gambino, who have all used the service, as well as up-and-coming musicians.
"I'm a little bit of an anomaly, in that I'm a much older artist than what gets played at radio, obviously. And I'm a much older artist than what typically winds up on playlists, and I'm also a much older artist than what most labels are interested in putting money into, because they don't make the money back," Crow told Billboard. "But that doesn't mean I'm not making good records, it doesn't mean that I'm not staying vital and creative. So for artists out there who don't belong, or seemingly don't fit into this cookie cutter world of very young pop, it's a great way to get your music out there."

As for releasing her anticipated 2019 album through Stem, we'll have to wait and see.
"[This album's] been in the works for about two years, and so we'll shop it and then we'll sort of evaluate where we're at," she said. "So I can't say specifically whether we'll do it through Stem or whether we'll do a one-off with the record and then come back to Stem, but I love knowing that it's there."
