Sharon Jones: Posthumous Album Set For November
The late Sharon Jones thrilled fans and audiences alike with her thunderous voice and commanding stage presence. A year after Jones' death following a bout with pancreatic cancer, Daptones Records will posthumously release a final Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings album, Soul Of A Woman, on Nov. 17.
The 11-track LP is preceded by the first single, "Matter Of Time," which is marked by a refrain themed after pushing forward in the face of adversity: "It's a matter of time before justice will come/It's a matter of time before all wars will be done."
The album contains a mix of the Dap-Kings' trademark soulful funk and moving ballads. According to Daptone Records co-founder Gabriel Roth, Jones recorded her vocals between gigs and chemotherapy appointments, which added a special layer to her performances.
"To my frustration, but to her credit, she wouldn't come into the studio until she was really feeling it," Roth told Rolling Stone. "She couldn't phone it in. Every time that she was counted out, she came back fighting."
Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings received one prior GRAMMY nomination for Best R&B Album for their 2014 studio album, Give The People What They Want.
