Positive Vibes Only: Wande Strikes A Courageous Note Of Resolve With “Wakande”

Wande won’t abide the haters and gossipers attempting to drag her down. However, that’s not a product of a swollen ego—it’s a directive from her Creator.

"God done flipped my story, alright,” she raps in her thrilling, Yoruba-inflected tune “Wakande,” which she performs as part of this week’s Positive Vibes Only: “I ain't trippin' what they say 'bout me / Even when they throw shade on me / ‘Cause the shade on me put shades on me.”

Positive Vibes Only: Wande

In an era where tearing down those more successful than oneself is fashionable, self-actualization is the best medicine—in more ways than one. Despite what the weight-loss and beauty industries might tell you, achieving better physical and mental health doesn’t come from whipping one’s body into submission. As Dr. Will Cole says at the top of the video, physically restoring oneself begins with loving oneself.

“You can’t heal a body you hate,” the bestselling author of "Intuitive Fasting," "Ketotarian" and "The Inflammation Spectrum" explains. “You cannot shame your way into wellness. You cannot obsess your way into health. When there’s this stress and striving when it comes to wellness, that is the antithesis of sustainable wellness, [which is] born out of self-respect.”

As the COVID-19 pandemic marks a year around the sun, music has been a primary channel for the grief, suffering and overall malaise many of us feel. Derrial Christon keenly understands this.

"There does seem to be light at the end of the tunnel," the celebrity host, journalist and producer says in this week’s Positive Vibes Only. "But even with that light, we all have to find a place that motivates us and gives us inspiration. Music is that place."

Positive Vibes Only: DOE

To guide us into that space of healing and uplift, gospel singer/songwriter DOE performs her tune "Good Now," about tackling problems by viewing them from a new vantage point.

Nearly a year into the COVID-19 pandemic, many peoples' love-lives have taken a hit. If you're single, dating can be a downright dangerous proposition; if you have a live-in partner, being in the same space nonstop for months on end can lead to friction.

Thankfully, in this week's Positive Vibes Only, GRAMMY-nominated DJ/producer Todd Terry and House Gospel Choir are here to strengthen us during this trying time for romance. From 29 different windows, they sing in crisp harmony about the oneness of the human family and our common fallibility and need for acceptance. In other words, we're all in this together. "If you need some love," they sing as a united throng, "Don’t you dare give up."

At the top of the video, TV host, actress, and entrepreneur Stacy Ike offers a soul-lifting speech about how we need to nurture our relationships during this isolating, perilous time—only to others, but to ourselves.

Led off by a heart-strengthening monologue from inspirational speaker Danielle LaPorte, the gospel greats offer a gorgeous take on the Pete Seeger classic

In uncertain times such as these, it's hard to tell how an earnest paean for peace like Pete Seeger's "If I Had A Hammer" has practical utility. This week's Positive Vibes Only episode revisits the song in the service of healing, reconciliation and optimism.

While Blind Boys Of Alabama may be best known for their heavy-hearted version of Tom Waits' "Way Down In The Hole"—read: you've got to keep the devil down there as the Season 1 theme music to HBO's "The Wire"—they can give you the strength to carry on, too. Their gorgeous, exuberant cover of "Hammer" is proof positive of this.

Positive Vibes Only: Blind Boys Of Alabama

At the top of the video, author, motivational speaker and entrepreneur Danielle LaPorte offers a soothing monologue about the intersection of faith and doubt. She explains why the latter isn't a bogeyman to be feared and avoided, but "an invitation for us to double down on our faith."

Watch the uplifting performance of "If I Had A Hammer" by Blind Boys Of Alabama below, and explore more episodes of GRAMMY.com's transformative Positive Vibes Only series.

GRAMMY.com Launches New Genre Pages To Expand Music Discovery

Updated daily, the genre pages will help GRAMMY.com fans explore the latest news, read artist interviews, watch original video series and exclusive performances, and discover your next favorite artist
GRAMMYs
Jan 20, 2021 - 8:00 am

The nature of music genres has changed. Today, we live in a genre-bending world where sounds and styles transcend boundaries. While the music you listen to and love can no longer only be defined by labels and categories, genres continue to provide music-lovers unique ways to discover new music and next-gen artists.

That's why we're launching our brand-new genre pages on GRAMMY.com, a dynamic feature aimed at fostering music discovery and expanding your musical knowledge. Updated daily, the genre pages will help GRAMMY.com fans discover their next favorite artist, stay up to date on the latest music news, read insightful artist interviews and explore our vast library of original video series, exclusive performances and archival footage.

Launching with sections for Rap, R&B, Pop, Country and Rock, the genre pages will give GRAMMY.com readers all the newest updates in music to know now, all packed in one, easy-to-use destination.

GRAMMY.com will launch more genre pages soon where you can explore all the artists, sounds and styles we celebrate every year at the annual GRAMMY Awards.

Much like genres themselves, the GRAMMY Awards have evolved with the ever-changing music industry throughout the decades. Originally launched in 1959, the annual GRAMMYs, music's only peer-recognized award and highest achievement, honor artists and music in a wide field of categories across more than a dozen genres. The number of awards and categories recognized at the GRAMMY Awards has changed throughout the years with the emergence of growing sounds and styles, like rap and Latin, while certain awards have been discontinued or combined into larger umbrella genres.

This year, at the 63rd GRAMMY Awards, airing Sunday, March 14, on CBS, the Recording Academy will recognize 83 categories across a vast array of genres.

As music continues to progress and fans expand the ways they consume music and culture, GRAMMY.com remains your go-to destination for new music discovery, Recording Academy and industry updates and engaging, music-first content.
