Pigging Out On "Weird Al"

Parody master's GRAMMY-winning spoof on Michael Jackson's "Bad" featured in this week's GRAMMY winners edition of Forgotten Videos

Welcome to Forgotten Videos, GRAMMY winners edition. For some, these videos are forgotten, for others just filed away, and for others still, a totally brand-new discovery. Our aim is to take you on a little trip down memory lane or help you discover new music, GRAMMY-style.

"Weird Al" Yankovic
"Fat"
1988

If one thing is certain in the career of GRAMMY-winning parody master "Weird Al" Yankovic, he loves a good parody dish with a hearty side of the King of Pop. Based on Michael Jackson's No. 1 hit "Bad," "Fat" not only is an anthem for the calorie-challenged who have "more chins than Chinatown," its arguably Yankovic at his zany best.

Comedy fans will recall Yankovic first parodied Jackson's smash "Beat It" with the foodie-laced "Eat It" in 1984. Yankovic's song nearly reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned him his first GRAMMY for Best Comedy Recording, so he fittingly decided to come back for seconds.

Starting with a vignette based on the extended video for Jackson's "Bad," a trim Yankovic is confronted in an empty subway by his former hippo-sized homies, who offer Ding Dongs, pizza and burgers and question his allegiance to their artery-blocking exploits. But Yankovic ultimately has enough and throws down the ultimate battle of the bulge in declaring, "You ain't fat, you ain't nothing!" In transforming into a tubby dancing bada**, Yankovic proceeds to wobble around with his portly posse, while scarfing down a ham sandwich on whole wheat and mimicking Jackson's moves and vocal nuances to a tee.

"Weird Al" Yankovic - Fat

"Fat" is featured on Even Worse, an album with a cover based on Jackson's Bad album cover and containing parodies of songs by artists such as George Harrison, Billy Idol and Tiffany. Though the song could only manage No. 99 on the Billboard Hot 100, the "Fat" video tasted good enough to Recording Academy voters, who awarded Yankovic the GRAMMY for Best Concept Music Video in 1988.

While artists such as Paul McCartney and Prince have denied Yankovic permission for the use of their songs, Jackson reportedly was a big "Weird Al" fan, and bought copies of Even Worse for his friends. "[Jackson] doesn't have to let me do this kind of stuff," Yankovic once remarked. "The only reason he would let me is because he has a great sense of humor."

Taking his food obsession to the next level, in 1993 Yankovic released The Food Album, a compilation featuring "Fat" nestled alongside favorites such as his "La Bamba" parody ("Lasagna") and his parody of the Knack's "My Sharona" that helped launch his career in 1979 ("My Bologna"). In 2003 he won his third GRAMMY for Best Comedy Album for Poodle Hat, an album containing parodies of songs by Backstreet Boys and Eminem.

With a career spanning more than 30 years, Yankovic is showing no signs of slowing down. His most recent album, 2011's Alpocalypse, is the highest-charting album of his career, peaking at No. 9 on the Billboard 200. True to form, the album contains parodies of songs by current pop stars such as Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus and Ke$ha. And Yankovic is looking for a fourth GRAMMY helping, as Alpocalypse is a current nominee for Best Comedy Album for the 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards.

In a 2011 interview with Maximum Fun, Yankovic intimated he is still carrying some serious weight: "It's a pretty heavy thing to realize that this far into my career I'm actually sort of peaking."

Have you ever seen the guy who says, "Yo Ding Dong man, Ding Dong yo," in the pastry aisle at the supermarket?

The first time four-time GRAMMY-winning song parodist and comedian "Weird Al" Yankovick received a golden gramophone in the mail, he had to assemble it himself; it came in two pieces.

"Oh, it's an IKEA GRAMMY," he says laughing. "You just like put it together on your own."

Weird Al Yankovic Shares Where He Keeps His GRAMMY

That year, in 1985, he won Best Comedy Recording for "Eat It" at the 27th GRAMMY Awards. Since then, he’s won three more times: Best Concept Music Video (“I’m Fat,” 1988), Best Comedy Album (Poodle Hat, 2003) and Best Comedy Album (Mandatory Fun, 2014).

"Every time I've won a GRAMMY, it's been a thrill—that never gets old," Yankovic says in the latest rendition of Where Do You Keep Your GRAMMY?

"Winning it the first time—I mean that's a big deal cause that sort of changes your life in way," he adds.

While still in awe of his first-time win ("I mean, I was up against Rodney Dangerfield and Richard Pryor … when I won it was just unbelievable"), Yankovic just might earn a fifth GRAMMY to add to his already-crowded shelf at the 61st GRAMMY Awards, where he's nominated for Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package for Squeeze Box: The Complete Works Of "Weird Al" Yankovic.

Check out where Yankovic stores his four GRAMMYs, and don’t forget to tune in to the 61st GRAMMY Awards on Sunday, Feb. 10 on CBS.

"Weird Al" Yankovic Wins Best Comedy Album

The comedy singer and purveyor of parodies often employs huge props and carefully-timed theatrical gags. However, just today, when Yankovic announced his new tour on Facebook, he revealed that all of that will change when he hits the road in 2018.

"If you’ve really got your heart set on seeing fat suits and Segways and hearing all your favorite parodies… this probably isn’t the tour for you," Yankovic explains in the post. "I know that there’s a small but enthusiastic subset of fans that literally have been waiting decades for this kind of a show, so… this tour is for them."

The full list of show dates for what Yankovic is calling "The Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour" will be announced tomorrow, Oct. 13 on Yankovic's website.

Welcome to Forgotten Videos. For some, these videos are forgotten, for others just filed away, and for others still, a totally brand-new discovery. Whichever category you fall into, each week we'll feature a video that's possibly been collecting dust when what it really deserves is a fresh look. Or vice-versa. … We're not here to judge, we just want to take you on a little trip down memory lane. Yep, you'll remember when hair was really that big, when drums were that up front in the mix, when video was young(er) and so were you.

The Cure
"Lullaby"
1989

As memorable as the Cure's "Lullaby" becomes after repeated listens, it only takes one viewing of the accompanying video to lodge it in your brain forever. Awarded Best British Video honors at the 1990 Brit Awards, "Lullaby" is an artfully nightmarish ode to arachnophobia, with the Cure frontman Robert Smith drawing a close comparison to Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands as he's serenaded by ghoulish bandmates, tormented by predatory versions of himself, and transformed in ways that would do author Franz Kafka and director David Cronenberg proud.

Director Tim Pope, who also directed videos for the Cure such as "High," "Friday I'm In Love" and "Just Like Heaven," among others, says the "Lullaby" video grew naturally (if you can call it that) from its source material.

"That song was particularly lurid and vivid," says Pope, "and it's got one of my favorite lines: 'And I feel like I'm being eaten/By a thousand million shivering furry holes.' My god, where can you go wrong with a line like that?"

May 15, 2017 – 2:36 am

The Cure - Lullaby

Pope says his work with Smith and the Cure fit nicely with his own early interest in filmmakers such as Alfred Hitchcock and Roman Polanski. "I had grown up with the films of Roman Polanski — you know, films like Repulsion and The Tenant [and they] were a great influence on me," he says. "They all tend to be kind of dark and obsessive. And that was something that went very well with the Cure's music and Robert's lyrics."

Meanwhile, devotees of the Cure continue to debate the source of the song's subject matter, which feels like a hallucinogenic take on Mary Howitt's early 19th century poem, "The Spider And The Fly" (an inspiration Smith makes explicit when he whispers something reminiscent of the poem's opening line near the end of the song).

While Smith most often attributes "Lullaby" to childhood nightmares, fans have speculated that it's actually a metaphor for everything from depression to addiction and abuse. The latter interpretation was further fueled by a portion of an MTV interview where Smith talks about the song. "One particular night, my uncle burst through the window, and he did unspeakable things," said Smith, before adding with a laugh, "He didn't really."

Pope is quick to point out that his friend and collaborator's knack for imaginative storytelling often spills over into real life. "He's one of the hugest liars, but in a lovely cuddly sort of way," he says. "He frames his story however he wants to. So maybe that's one of his, shall we say, slightly made-up stories."

While Pope also spent decades making videos for artists such as David Bowie, the Cars, KT Tunstall, and Neil Young, he eventually moved into film and advertising work after MTV pulled the plug on its "music television revolution." More recently, he's worked with artists ranging from the Kaiser Chiefs to Fatboy Slim.

When asked about the age-old criticism that music videos somehow take away from the purity of the listening experience, the director points out that we have eyes as well as ears.

"I don't think they ruined the songs," says Pope. "With all my videos, I tried to add to the song, but still allow the song to breathe — if the song was brilliant enough to be allowed to breathe."

(Bill Forman is a writer and music editor for the Colorado Springs Independent and the former publications director for The Recording Academy.)
