Mavis Staples To Celebrate 80th Birthday With Three Concert Parties In May
On Feb. 12 Mavis Staples and Newport Folk announced three "Mavis & Friends" concerts in May celebrating 80 years of Mavis Staples with dates on May 9 in New York City, May 15 in Nashville and May 22 in Los Angeles. Proceeds from the three concerts will go to benefit Newport Festivals Foundation's educational efforts in each of the three cities.
First famous for her work with the Staple Singers, Mavis Staples' voice has combined spirituals, hitmaking and civil rights and she is still going strong, including working with younger artists such as Hozier and Jeff Tweedy. Although famous for singing with her family group, Mavis Staples' two GRAMMY wins were for her work as a solo artist. At the 53rd GRAMMY Awards, 2010's You Are Not Alone won Best Americana Album. At the 58th GRAMMY Awards, her interpretation of the classic "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean," from her 2015 EP Your Good Fortune, won for Best American Roots Performance.
Tickets for her three birthday concerts will be available through Mavis Staples' website and go on sale on Feb. 15. Guest appearance performers have not yet been announced.
