Martin Garrix: Why "Animals" Was A Big Surprise

On Aug. 4 Dutch electronic/dance DJ/producer Martin Garrix will provide the soundtrack to the halftime show of the Guinness International Champions Cup Final in Miami. Ahead of his performance, Garrix participated in an exclusive GRAMMY.com interview, discussing the one word that defines his style, his hit "Animals" and why he loves performing live.

"If I'm in the studio I can't wait … to play [a new song] live and to see the crowd's reaction," said Garrix. "If you play something completely new, which nobody has heard before, and the reaction is good, it means it's a great track."

Born Martijn Garritsen in Amsterdam, Garrix set his sights on becoming a DJ at age 8 after seeing GRAMMY nominee Tiësto perform during the opening ceremony of the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. In 2012 Garrix signed with Spinnin' Records and released his first single "BFAM" with fellow electronic/dance artist Julian Jordan. He gained wider fame with a remix of Christina Aguilera's hit "Your Body," which appeared on the deluxe version of her 2012 album Lotus. "Animals," Garrix's debut solo single, was released in 2013. The track cracked the Top 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and currently has been viewed more than 304 million times on YouTube.

On July 8 Garrix released his debut EP, Gold Skies, which features five tracks, including the title track, "Animals" and "Tremor."

Garrix is currently in the midst of an international tour, with dates scheduled through October.

Today Lollapalooza Berlin announced its fifth annual lineup, with GRAMMY-winning rock groups Kings Of Leon and Twenty One Pilots, GRAMMY-nominated EDM supergroup Swedish House Mafia, plus German indie rock group Kraftklub and Dutch DJ/producer Martin Garrix as headliners.

The festival will take place on Sept. 7–8 and will also bring GRAMMY-nominated Georgia-born R&B artists 6LACK and Khalid, L.A.-native wunderkid Billie Eilish, GRAMMY-nominated groundbreaking U.K. electronic group Underworld and many more to Berlin for a musical melting pot.

The lineup also reveals a "TBA" headline spot for Saturday, as well as more artists to be shared at a later date. Some of the other notable musical acts, of which there are too many to list, include Afro-Latina rapper Princess Nokia, DJ/producer Gryffin, British indie duo Pale Waves, U.K. crooner Tom Walker and Chinese rap group Higher Brothers.

17-year old anti-popstar Eilish and 21-year-old pop/R&B sensation Khalid both made their Lollapalooza debuts last year at the festival's flagship event in Chicago. EDM heroes Swedish House Mafia are marking a triumphant 2019 reunion tour as they continue to announce headline festival dates. They have yet to share any plans for U.S. shows.

Tickets and the complete lineup are available at Lolla Berlin's website.

Shaky Beats Fest has brought EDM, indie and hip-hop artists to Atlanta since 2016, and now, for its 2019 edition, the festival has announced that powerhouse DJs Martin Garrix and Rüfüs Du Sol will headline.

San Holo, Fisher Big Gigantic, Ekali and Boogie T are among the other acts bringing the beats to the two-day festival, happening May 10–11. The fest will return to Central Park, its 2018 location.

2-Day GA, GA+ and VIP #ShakyBeats tickets are on sale NOW! Grab one for yourself or a 4-pack for your crew. Layaway plans available on ALL ticket types. https://t.co/6vzlkkDj4I pic.twitter.com/XroRsshCOn

The beats festival makes a point to highlight some of Atlanta's own artists; local acts include Mantis, Eddie Gold, Movin' Keyz, DJ Zoe Gray, and Airwolf.

In October, San Holo spoke with the Recording Academy about fan energy at his live shows, including festivals:

"Honestly, sometimes people [are] at the show and they are just standing there, listening, and I first start to think "Oh, they're bored" or something, or like, I should be more energetic, I have to jump around, but I still have to realize [that there are some] people that really don't, they just listen, might actually be the biggest [kind of] music fans there are [at] festivals. They just stand there in the back, just listening and I really appreciate those people because they don't care if I really scream, "One, two, three, jump," or something, they don't care about that stuff. They just want to hear me play guitar and like do my thing. But, honestly, actually, everyone at the shows ... whatever you want to do, if you want to jump that's fine, if you want to dance around that's fine, if you want to do nothing that's fine, as long as you feel something."
