Kesha Speech, Logic Performance Spike Suicide Prevention Calls
We know from research that popular media — music, TV, film — has a huge impact on us. That's why when artists use these platforms to reach out with a positive message of hope, it can make a big difference. Such was the case of Kesha's moving speech and the performance of Logic's "1-800-273-8255" on MTV's Video Music Awards on Aug. 27.
Rapper Logic, joined by Alessia Cara and Khalid alongside suicide-attempt survivors, took the stage for a poignant performance of "1-800-273-8255," the number of the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. According to the lifeline's Director of Communications Frances Gonzalez, this performance alone caused a 50 percent spike in calls to the hotline.
"Logic's performance of '1-800-273-8255' on the MTV VMAs last night delivered a positive message that has had and will continue to have a lasting impact," Gonzalez said. "Sharing that healing and hope are possible helps individuals in crisis, [and] as changes the conversation around suicide from one of isolation to one of hope and connection."
Kesha's touching introduction to the piece also contributed to the increase in potentially life-saving calls.
"None of us are alone. It takes great courage to show the vulnerable side of being human and we all have that vulnerable side," said Kesha. "Whatever you are going through, however dark it may seem, there is an undeniable truth and strength in the fact that you are not alone. We all have struggles and, as long as you never give up on yourself, light will break through the darkness."
