Katy Perry to Superman: How to make playlists that 'Roar'
Compiling the perfect playlist is an art form in itself. A curated collection of songs has the uncanny ability to transform our mood instantly. For instance, the right collection of feel-good songs can make the perfect road trip, while an inspirational playlist can instantly elevate one's confidence into the stratosphere. Staying with the positive, motivational keynote speaker Christopher S. Penn has devised a got-to-try methodology for assembling mood-lifting themed playlists.
Through the lens of the martial art Ninjutsu, Penn identifies four playlist categories based on the primordial elements of energy: Earth (Confidence), Water (Calmness), Fire (Creativity), and Wind (Compassion). In terms of compiling, one would itemize an Earth (Confidence) playlist by combing through songs that conjure feelings of confidence, self-esteem and invincibility. Or, as Penn writes, an Earth (Confidence) playlist would feature songs that "bring up a feeling of being unstoppable, immovable, completely confident [or] heroic figures like Superman or Wonder Woman."
Putting this into practice, the following 10-song Spotify playlist culls GRAMMY-winning and -nominated recordings and GRAMMY Hall Of Fame-inducted songs, including songs by Katy Perry, Kendrick Lamar and U2 — all anchored around Earth (Confidence).
Read Penn's entire blog entry and learn more about how you can start building playlists that will, to paraphrase GRAMMY winner R. Kelly, have you believing you can fly.
