The Red Hot Chili Peppers announced major news Sunday: guitarist John Frusciante is returning to the GRAMMY-winning Los Angeles rock band for a third time, as longtime guitarist Josh Klinghoffer departs.

"The Red Hot Chili Peppers announce that we are parting ways with our guitarist of the past ten years, Josh Klinghoffer," bassist Flea said in a message post on Instagram. "Josh is a beautiful musician who we respect and love. We are deeply grateful for our time with him, and the countless gifts he shared with us."

He also added "with great excitement and full hearts" that Frusciante, who joined the band after the death of founding guitarist Hillel Slovak, would once again join the group.

Frusciante, known for his funk and psychedelia-inspired guitar riffs, helped shaped the RCHP sound early on. He first appeared on the Mother's Milk LP in 1989 and left the band after the release of the 1991 breakthrough album Blood Sugar Sex Magik. He rejoined the group a few years later and appeared on albums released in the late 90s through the mid-00s. He left the group again in 2009 because, to "put it simply, my musical interests have led me in a different direction."

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are set to play music festivals next year, including Hangout and Boston Calling.

Jack Sherman, a former guitarist and songwriter for rock icons Red Hot Chili Peppers (RHCP) who played and recorded on the band's 1984 self-titled debut album, has died, Rolling Stone reports. He was 64. No cause of death has been confirmed.

On Friday (Aug. 21), the group confirmed Sherman's death on its official social media accounts, writing on Instagram, "We of the RHCP family would like to wish Jack Sherman smooth sailing into the worlds beyond, for he has passed … He was a unique dude and we [to] thank him for all times good, bad and in between. Peace on the boogie platform."

Sherman, who joined RHCP in late 1983 when he replaced founding member and original guitarist Hillel Slovak, can be heard on The Red Hot Chili Peppers, the group's only album to feature him on guitar. He also co-wrote a majority of the group's second album, Freaky Styley (1985), but he was replaced by Slovak who'd rejoined the group in early 1985 and ultimately recorded the guitar parts on the LP. (Following Slovak's death due to a heroin overdose in 1988, RHCP cycled through a number of guitarists, including Dave Navarro, Josh Klinghoffer, DeWayne McKnight, Arik Marshall and Jesse Tobias; longtime on-again, off-again guitarist John Frusciante rejoined the group last December.)

Sherman would later partially rejoin RHCP to record background vocals on a couple of tracks off the band's 1989 album, Mother's Milk, including "Higher Ground," a cover of Stevie Wonder's 1973 hit that earned the act its first-ever GRAMMY nomination, for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal, at the 1991 GRAMMYs.

Elsewhere, Sherman featured on albums from Bob Dylan, George Clinton, Peter Case, Tonio K. and others.

While RHCP were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2012, Sherman was not included as part of the induction ceremony, Rolling Stone notes.

"It's really painful to see all this celebrating going on and be excluded," Sherman told Billboard in 2012. "I'm not claiming that I've brought anything other to the band ... but to have soldiered on under arduous conditions to try to make the thing work, and I think that's what you do in a job, looking back. And that's been dishonored. I'm being dishonored, and it sucks."

Back in 1993, legendary Los Angeles group the Red Hot Chili Peppers brought full-on California rock star energy to the GRAMMY stage when they accepted their first-ever golden gramophone. The band accepted the award (for Best Hard Rock Performance With Vocal for "Give It Away") mostly shirtless, with only Chad Smith donning a top.

Frontman Anthony Kiedis speaks on behalf of the quartet, rocking his long hair down, wearing just a floral skirt and name dropping Little Richard, Sinéad O'Connor Howard Stern and even Mother Nature. Watch the full, amazing acceptance speech below, which is the latest episode of our GRAMMY Rewind video series.

GRAMMY Rewind: Red Hot Chili Peppers

"I was hanging out, earlier today, at the men's club with Little Richard and Howard Stern; they both told me to say, 'Everybody, hi, how you doin'?' And they'd like to be here at the moment but they can't because they're off teaching Sinéad how to tango. But she says 'Hi,' too," Kiedis says, smiling and eliciting laughter from the audience.

He then dedicates their big win to a worthy cause: "The only person I'd really like to thank is Mother Nature, for giving this universe music, because without music I'd be nowhere."

The "Californication" rockers received two nominations at the 35th GRAMMY Awards that year, with their hit "Under The Bridge" earning a nod for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal (U2 took home that win instead, for "Achtung Baby").

"Give It Away" was released in September 1991 as the lead single to their funky Rick Rubin-produced fifth studio album, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, which followed later that year. "Under The Bridge" was released as the LP's second single in March 1992, bringing their electric sound to the mainstream with a No. 2 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. It was their first song to hit the top 10 on the all-genre chart, with "Give It Away" only entering the chart at No. 73 in 1992, after "Under The Bridge" brought their sound out in the open. The album was also a commercial hit, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard 200.

The album's title track later earned the band their fourth GRAMMY nod at the 38th GRAMMY Awards. Their first nomination came at the 33rd GRAMMY Awards, for their 1989 rocked-out cover of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground."

The longstanding SoCal rock heroes have since taken home two more GRAMMY wins, at the 49th GRAMMY Awards in 2007. They won Best Rock Album for Stadium Arcadium and Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal its lead single "Dani California."

"It's important to us to have something for everyone, and the decision to have classic hip hop on the lineup was a no brainer -- I know every Eric B. & Rakim song by heart," Dave Graham, chief executive of BottleRock Napa Valley told Billboard. "And then when you see Maren Morris and Zedd on the lineup, who together had one of the biggest songs on the planet with ‘The Middle,' we feel this lineup represents the best of what is happening in music right now."

Tickets for BottleRock Napa Valley 2020 go on sale Jan. 7.
