The GRAMMYs At SXSW
GRAMMY Week may be over for The Recording Academy, but that doesn't mean we're slowing down.
GRAMMY.com is returning to Austin, Texas, for the annual South by Southwest music festival and conference. Whether by foot, cab or pedicab, we'll be hitting 6th Street and beyond to provide you with daily coverage from our SXSW vantage point, including Academy-related events and other SXSW buzz.
Before we took off for the "live music capital of the world," we asked GRAMMY winners (and Austin residents) Shawn Colvin and Eric Johnson what makes the city a mecca for artists, musicians and music fans.
"When I first moved to Austin in 1976 I did so with a band," said Colvin. "We'd heard it was a musician's dream town, and it was. Lots of venues and gigs for local artists, [and] a super tight and supportive community. … Although these days I'm more of a single soccer mom than a club hopper, I still feel plugged into the same vibe and excitement regarding live music in our town, not to mention still feeling part of a group of friends and colleagues who do what I do. I'd move here again in a heartbeat."
"I feel lucky and honored to be an Austin musician," said Johnson. "Growing up here introduced me to many different genres and styles of music [and] I learned to appreciate and enjoy all the diverse styles of music this Southwestern mecca had to offer from it's deep and rich musical heritage. I always assumed all cities had this diverse richness. As a kid, when I first started touring and traveling about, I learned that our richness and diversity was strongly special and not always abundant in other areas. I'm glad I grew up here and learned to play and be inspired by all the continuing great Austin music."
