GRAMMY.com Tour Diary: The Head And The Heart
The Recording Academy Memphis Chapter recently traveled from their headquarters in Memphis, Tenn., to Nashville for a concert at the Cannery Ballroom featuring indie folk band the Head And The Heart for the inaugural installment of GRAMMY.com Tour Diary, a new series featuring intimate interviews and exclusive performances that highlight the musically enriched regions of the United States and lives of touring musicians. While on the road, the Chapter visited historical music staples including Elvis Presley's Graceland Mansion, the Stax Museum and the legendary Sun Studio in Memphis, and the Country Music Hall of Fame, Ryman Auditorium and Grand Ole Opry in Nashville.
Prior to the Head And The Heart's concert, the band participated in an exclusive GRAMMY.com interview and discussed their songwriting process, musical influences and career milestones, among other topics.
"We got to a point where we really cracked down and got serious. We weren't making any money, we were just playing local shows, but we got into a practice schedule," said the Head And The Heart's Kenny Hensley. "We all got to a point where we believed in the music and knew if we put the time in and became not only good songwriters but good performers that we could really do something."
During their Nashville concert, the band performed a selection of songs from their 2010 self-titled debut album, including "Rivers And Roads," "Winter Song" and the Top 25 Rock Songs hit "Lost In My Mind."
Formed in Seattle in 2009, the Head And The Heart features Hensley (piano), Josiah Johnson (vocals/guitar/percussion), Jonathan Russell (vocals/guitar/percussion), Charity Rose Thielen (vocals/violin/percussion), Tyler Williams (drums), and Chris Zasche (bass). The band describes their live performances as "inspiring and really goddamn fun," with "plenty of hand percussion and foot stomps." The Head And The Heart was re-released in 2011 on Sub Pop Records. The album peaked at No. 1 on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart. The Head And The Heart are currently on tour throughout the United States, with dates scheduled through November.
Special thanks to Graceland Mansion, the Stax Museum, Sun Studio, the Country Music Hall of Fame, Ryman Auditorium, and Grand Ole Opry.
