GRAMMY Glam Squad: Red-y, Set, Dress!
(The Recording Academy has formed the GRAMMY Glam Squad, a diverse group of online influencers who will lead the discussion on beauty, fashion and lifestyle during GRAMMY Week in February. The squad will provide exclusive VIP access to select events, including the highly anticipated red carpet for the 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards. Stay tuned here for more tips on how to be inspired, be connected and be noticed.)
I've had the pleasure (and sometimes anxiety) of experiencing more than a few reds. Haven't we all? How do you find the perfect blazing-red stiletto or platform? How about lipstick: blue-red or yellow-red? Red wine — light, medium or full-bodied? Discovering or discerning the "just-right" red is a process, period. The red carpet is no different.
With awards season comes an undeniable excitement surrounding who will win, of course. But spectators and attendees alike are equally occupied with appearances ... win or lose. Whether you're the performer, host or unsuspecting tag-along relative, if your toe touches the carpet, you will be judged. Producing the "perfect" look takes a glam-squad village!
Most think that deciding on a look begins with "Who and what do I wear?" queries. Will sequins, feathers or mixed prints make the statement? Head-to-toe black? (Sexy or too expected?) Would spandex or latex be more fitting? Mood boards are created, after which stylists (or underlings) race about from design houses to accessory showrooms securing pieces that will bring the artfully crafted image to life. Once the ensemble (and perhaps a backup outfit) are finalized, creativity continues when makeup artists and hair stylists curate looks — from gunmetal smoky eyes, magenta lips and flushed cheeks to pony tails, curls, updos, and wigs.
The truth is the most stunning looks are as much about attitude and healthy bodies as they are about the frocks, tresses and makeup. If either of these ingredients go amiss, the final look, no matter how many dressers have twirled or double-sided-taped assets into place, seems to lack. It's not difficult to tell who has spent time in the gym toning biceps, calves waistlines ... and who hasn't, when confidence lacks or when the smirk stands in for a smile. Like rouge, it shows! The most desired presentations send a message about fashion or beauty but also about true style and personality.
I've been training for the last two months, mastering my calm and posture in yoga, practicing my smile and hitting the gym with celebrity fitness guru, @theMarkJenkins. I'm ready to take in and share GRAMMY Week and Music's Biggest Night on Feb. 12 with you. We'll chat, tweet style-swoon over the hits and stare quizzically at the misses. Join me! I'll be the svelte, long-legged beauty with flawless skin, fly hair, delicately defined deltoids, and bright smile wearing ... well, you'll have to wait and see!
