GRAMMY Awards director Louis J. Horvitz has received a nomination for the Directors Guild of America's DGA Awards for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Variety/Talk/News/Sports — Specials for his work on the 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards, which aired on Feb. 10, 2013.
The nomination is Horvitz's 17th DGA Award nomination. He won the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Musical Variety in 1997 for "The Kennedy Center Honors."
Horvitz joined the GRAMMY production team as director for the 52nd GRAMMY Awards in 2010, replacing longtime GRAMMY producer Walter C. Miller. He received Emmy nominations for Outstanding Directing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Special for the 53rd GRAMMY Awards in 2011 and Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special for the 54th GRAMMY Awards in 2012.
Horvitz has directed the annual Academy Awards telecast a record 12 times, which has resulted in 10 Emmy nominations and five wins; the Primetime Emmy Awards 13 times; "The Kennedy Center Honors" for 17 years, which has resulted in two Emmy wins; and the American Film Institute Life Achievement Award tributes a total of 21 times. In 2009 Horvitz directed the "Kids Inaugural: We Are The Future" concert special for President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama.
In a career that has spanned more than four decades, Horvitz has also directed numerous other high-profile programs, including the American Music Awards; Fashion Rocks; the MTV Video Music Awards; VH1's "The Concert For New York City" benefiting survivors of Sept. 11; the Super Bowl XXXVI halftime show featuring U2; Paul Simon's Concert In The Park; the Rolling Stones' Steel Wheels Tour; Live Aid; and the landmark musical variety series "Solid Gold."
The 56th GRAMMY Awards will take place live on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at Staples Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast in high-definition TV and 5.1 surround sound on the CBS Television Network from 8–11:30 p.m. (ET/PT). The telecast also will be supported on radio worldwide via WestwoodOne, and covered online at GRAMMY.com and CBS.com.
