Recorded Music Sales Up In 2012
Global revenue from recorded music sales increased 0.3 percent to $16.5 billion in 2012, marking the first year of industry growth since 1999, according to IFPI's "Digital Music Report 2013." Revenue from digital music sales increased 9 percent to $5.6 billion and now account for 34 percent of total music revenue. Streaming music subscribers increased 44 percent to 20 million, with subscription services accounting for 10 percent of total digital music revenue. The top-selling single of 2012 was Carly Rae Jepsen's GRAMMY-nominated "Call Me Maybe," and Adele's GRAMMY-winning 21 was the top-selling album.
UMG Revenue Up
Universal Music Group posted $2.14 billion in earnings before interest, taxes and amortization for the fourth quarter, a 9.1 percent increase from the same period last year. UMG's overall revenue in 2012 reached $6 billion, up from $5.5 billion the previous year. Digital music sales now represent 44 percent of UMG music sales.
Mumford Look To Rap And Roll
On the heels of their GRAMMY win for Album Of The Year for Babel at the 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards on Feb. 10, British folk rockers Mumford & Sons are already looking to make new music … and maybe even some fresh beats. "I do feel like we're ready to make the departure," said keyboardist Ben Lovett in a recent interview. What kind of departure? "Like hip-hop," added Marcus Mumford. "We really want to rap. … We've been talking with Jay-Z about it." When asked if the band has any prior rapping experience, Mumford admits the band often raps in the practice room. "We're like, 'Motherf***er," he said. Could there be a remixed version of "Little Lion Man" featuring, appropriately, Snoop Lion in the offing?
