Dillon Francis: "I Just Want To Make People Laugh"

Los Angeles-based DJ/producer Dillon Francis recently visited The Recording Academy's headquarters in Santa Monica, Calif., to participate in an exclusive GRAMMY.com interview. Francis discussed his forthcoming debut album, Money Sucks, Friends Rule, his upcoming Friends Rule Tour, his goals for making music, and creating the video for "Get Low" with director Mister Whitmore.

"There definitely are some people [who] don't even know my music or don't even like my music, but just like [my videos] online. And that's fine with me," said Francis. "I just love making weird, stupid videos that make no sense. … I just want to make people laugh."

After attending art school and a stint as an intern for producer/artist Cory Enemy, Francis became known for bringing to the forefront the moombahton genre — a fusion of house music and reggaeton created by DJ/producer Dave Nada. Francis got his music break when he played a demo of his track "Masta Blasta" for DJ Ruckus, who subsequently convinced his manager to send it to GRAMMY-nominated DJ/producer Diplo. Francis subsequently collaborated with Diplo on the track "Que Que" from his 2011 EP Westside. In 2012 Francis became the first moombahton artist to reach No.1 on the Beatport Top 5 releases chart with his EP Something, Something, Awesome. The following year Francis was labeled by MTV as an artist to watch.

Set for release on Oct. 28, Money Sucks, Friends Rule features 12 tracks, including collaborations with DJ Snake ("Get Low"), Panic At The Disco's Brendon Urie ("Love In The Middle Of A Firefight"), Major Lazer and Stylo G ("We Make It Bounce"), and Martin Garrix [link to interview] ("Set Me Free"). Francis will kick off his Friends Rule Tour Nov. 17 in Nashville, Tenn., with dates scheduled through January 2015.

Las Vegas always has a little something for everyone. But for all of 2018, dance music fans will have a buffet of sonic delights to sample all at a single venue.

The Wynn Hotel and Casino has announced its official lineup of DJ residencies at its Intrigue nightclub and day club for 2018, and the list includes just about every sound a dance music fan could ask for.

Alongside the obvious can’t-miss bookings of Vegas mainstays like the Chainsmokers, — nominated this year for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 60th GRAMMYs for “Something Just Like This” — past GRAMMY winners David Guetta, Diplo, and Afrojack, and past GRAMMY nominees DJ Snake and Alesso, will come big room favorites and international superstars like Dillon Francis, Yellow Claw, marshmello, RL Grime, Major Lazer, and others.

For the up-tempo rave heads and deep/tech house lovers alike, there will also be a slate of newer and more select underground names making the billing as well, including electro-step crossover producer Slushii, progressive electropop hit makers Galantis, club night all-stars Jamie Jones, Valentino Khan, and Solomun, and many more.

In announcing the upcoming lineup of residencies, Wynn Nightlife Managing Partner Alex Cordova said in a press release, “With so many superstar long-term resident artists returning, and exciting newly-signed artists joining the Wynn family, we will continue to provide the best night- and dayclub entertainment experience available on the Strip.”

Tickets, reservations, and additional information about the 2018 season of Wynn Nightlife club night and day club experiences can be found on the resort’s official website.

Boys Noize, Skrillex Headline Hard Summer Music Festival

By Brent Burns

I was among the estimated 30,000 EDM-loving attendees who filtered into the starlit Los Angeles State Historic Park on Aug. 3–4 for the Hard Summer Music Festival. Gary Richards, whose company Hard Events produces the festival, provided enthusiastic fans with more than 50 acts spread across four stages over two days. The arms that weren't waving in the air to the relentless music were either around a friend's shoulder or busy taking pictures of the festival's fully immersive audiovisual attractions.

Day one of the festival included explosive performances by acts such as Magnetic Man, Bloc Party, Miike Snow, and Breakbot (whose collection of catchy synth-pop was probably the grooviest set anyone would hear all weekend). But the main attraction was the evening's headliner Boys Noize, the stage name of Alexander Ridha. Before his set, I had a chance to sit down with him to discuss what we could expect from his performance, his record label Boysnoize Records and his highly anticipated forthcoming album, Out Of The Black.

After taking almost a year off the festival circuit, Ridha recently spent time in Berlin channeling the raw elements of his early days as a producer, when he was admittedly naive and experimenting with his creative process. He says he can still be found shuffling through crates of records every week, which is where he found inspiration for not only his own music, but also for the direction of the artists he's signed to his own label — a label that is now home to approximately 20 artists. And while Ridha was tight-lipped on sharing details of his set, his smirk meant he clearly had a few tricks up his sleeve. "It will be a classic festival set. Techno-ravey, and a lot of fresh stuff you've never heard before," he slyly noted.

Before joining the sweaty thousands who surrounded the main stage awaiting Boys Noize's performance, I ran into Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters, who was there to support Ridha, his longtime friend and collaborator. If I wasn't already anxiously excited to see the show, hearing someone as incredibly talented as Shears so humbly gush about Ridha's expertise made me feel like I had just awoken on Christmas morning. "Only the horses, and Boys Noize, can bring us back home tonight," laughed Shears, making a reference to the Scissor Sisters single “Only The Horses" that was co-written by Ridha.

As expected, after an echoing Boys Noize chant called for the German producer to begin his set, the robotic vocal beginning his show turned the crowd's chant to a scream-level cheer. The festival had saved its best for last, with Boys Noize giving attendees an hour of sharp-hitting techno and thumping house anthems, served by a musical connoisseur of artistic excellence.

Day two was noticeably more crowded, and hosted an equally impressive display of virtuosic skill on stage with acts such as Dillon Francis, Zedd, Nero, and GRAMMY-winning sensation Skrillex, who was crowned with the closing slot. Accompanied by a merciless strobe, Skrillex's staging was impressive. Surrounded by what appeared to be a hybrid of a futuristic aircraft and Transformers character Optimus Prime, Skrillex was positioned in the middle with colorful screens on every side displaying warped imagery, a kaleidoscope of lighting effects and sporadic pyrotechnics synced to the artist's drum rolls and bass drops. One of the set's highlights was his remix of Benny Benassi's "Cinema," which the crowd sang along to at the top of its lungs, "You are a cinema/I could watch you forever." Even if you tried your best to remain motionless, you would have failed miserably, swaying in time.

Fans even became the feature of the festival, as the crowd's image was projected outward on main stage screens from Skrillex's point of view, giving a unique perspective to the mass of people united under the same love and devotion for the EDM culture sweeping the globe.

EDM At Coachella: Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger

It's time to dust off your floral crowns and boho-chic ensembles because the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is just around the corner. It's time to prepare yourself for sun overexposure, mild dehydration and sleep deprivation, all in the name of good music. I know you may be thinking that after three days in Indio, Calif., last year, you told yourself, "Never again." But a year has passed and the desert oasis of music and good vibes is calling back. To add to your Coachella spirit, let's take a look inside the dance/electronica artists everyone's buzzing about.

This year's lineup boasts an impressive roster of EDM acts, both well-established and emerging. After seeing the lineup for Miami's Ultra Music Festival in March, I thought Coachella certainly had its work cut out in order to compete, but after close evaluation, there are some talented acts you won't want to miss. While we patiently wait for set times to be announced, it is without question that you'll find me in the infamous Sahara tent, which continues to grow year after year and has hosted some of the top EDM artists in the world, including Swedish House Mafia and Paul Oakenfold.

Of course, the talk of the lineup is the rumor that Daft Punk will make a cameo during Phoenix's performance. With Daft Punk's upcoming album, Random Access Memories, to be released May 21, and given the duo and Phoenix have shared the stage before, it's certainly something I dare to dream for. But there are plenty of confirmed acts to be excited about, including GRAMMY-nominated artist Steve Aoki, Major Lazer, Pretty Lights, Dillon Francis, Disclosure, Roni Size, the 2 Bears, and Robert DeLong, among many others.

Whether it's house, indietronica, trap, UK garage, minimal techno, dubstep, or experimental, never underestimate Coachella's booking power fueled by youthful nostalgia and a true myriad of genres, which, in my opinion, is what EDM is all about.

Who are you most excited to see?  Check out the full lineup for details. See you in the desert!
