Dave Chappelle, 'The Age Of Spin & Deep In The Heart Of Texas': For The Record
Funnyman Dave Chappelle may have started his career doing stand-up around New York City, but after landing some big movie roles you may have heard of — Robin Hood: Men In Tights, anyone? — he spent much of his focus on film and TV roles, until 2017 brought him back to his roots.
On March 21, 2017, Chappelle made his return to stand-up with two Netflix specials: The Age Of Spin, filmed at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles and Deep In The Heart Of Texas, filmed at Austin City Limits. These specials marked Chappelle's first full-length comedy stand-ups in over a decade, and they paid off — they were Netflix's most-viewed comedy specials ever.
Both specials were combined into a double album, which earned Chappelle his first career GRAMMY nomination at the 60th GRAMMY Awards for Best Comedy Album. Not only did Chappelle give an assist to Kendrick Lamar with the opening performance at the 60th GRAMMYs, but he also took home GRAMMY gold that night, marking his first career win.
"I'm honored to win an award, finally," Chappelle said onstage while accepting his GRAMMY. He went on to list his thanks yous before concluding hilariously, "See you on Monday."
