In The Boardroom With Julianne Jordan
Music supervisor Julianne Jordan was the recent guest for an installment of In The Boardroom, an educational series produced by The Recording Academy Los Angeles Chapter featuring interviews with past and present Academy Board members. Jordan discussed her music background as a violist, her role as a music supervisor, responsibilities such as hiring composers and licensing songs for feature films, and her work on films such as The Bourne Identity and The Italian Job, among other topics.
"I look at a rough cut of the film with the director and the [music] editor and we go through the whole film and figure out the different spots where we think we can have songs in the movie," said Jordan. "[The music editor and I then] go through songs that we want to present to the director … it could be hundreds of songs for every spot in the film. We narrow down the songs and we show the director five or 10 choices. The director narrows it down from there."
Jordan studied viola and business at New York-based Skidmore College. Following graduation, she moved to San Francisco to work for the San Francisco Symphony and subsequently relocated to Los Angeles. Jordan began her career in music supervision when she worked with director Doug Liman on the 1996 film Swingers. The film's soundtrack features songs by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Dean Martin, George Jones, and Bobby Darin, among others. Jordan has since collaborated with Limon on films such as Go, The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Fair Game. Her recent film wokrk includes New Year's Eve, Hop, Yogi Bear, Red, and Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. Jordan won an award for Best Music Supervision in Film for film at the inaugural Guild of Music Supervisors Awards in 2011.
Jordan is a current member of The Recording Academy Los Angeles Chapter Board. On July 21 she was a participant in the San Francisco Chapter's GRAMMY GPS: Music For Visual Media event in Emeryville, Calif.
