Beyoncé, Jay-Z Among Headliners At Global Citizen Festival Honoring Nelson Mandela
The festival, which will take place in Johannesburg, will also act on the South African leader's call for this generation to end poverty. Global Citizen, an organization that unites engaged citizens who are using their voice to end poverty, is presenting the event for free to those who begin taking action on August 21 on their platforms.
The organization has partnered with Mandela's family, the House of Mandela, to create the event which will be a capstone to the Be The Generation campaign, which seeks to end poverty and rally $1 billion in new pledges.
GRAMMY winners Eddie Vedder, Pharrell Williams, Chris Martin, and Usher will also perform at the festival. Other artists on the lineup include Cassper Nyovest, D'banj, Sho Madjozi and Tiwa Savage as well as GRAMMY nominated artists Femi Kuti and Wizkid.
The music artists will be joined by Oprah Winfrey, who will speak at the festival, and other entertainment personalities.
"Nelson Mandela's life story is a testament to the power of the human spirit and one man's ability to change the world by standing up for what he believed in," Winfrey said. "It is one of the great honors of my life to have spent so much time with him, and I look forward to celebrating his courageous life."
