Berlin Visit The GRAMMY Museum
L.A.-based synth-pop group Berlin recently participated in an installment of the GRAMMY Museum's The Drop series. Before an intimate audience at the Museum's Clive Davis Theater, Berlin vocalist Terri Nunn discussed her musical influences and the band's cover of Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody To Love." Following the discussion, Berlin performed a brief set featuring the No. 1 hit "Take My Breath Away", "Sex (I'm A…)" and "Animal," the title track from their recently released studio album.
"Grace Slick, to me, is a reason that I sing," said Nunn. "Her music is just beyond the beyond."
Formed in 1982 in Los Angeles by bassist John Crawford, Nunn and keyboardist David Diamond, Berlin's debut EP, 1982's Pleasure Victim, cracked the Top 40 on the Billboard 200 and featured the Billboard Hot 100 hits "The Metro," "Masquerade" and the provocative "Sex (I'm A…)." They followed with their 1984 full-length release, Love Life, which peaked at No. 28 and featured the hits "No More Words" and "Now It's My Turn." The band achieved their first and only No. 1 hit to date with "Take My Breath Away," which was featured in the 1986 Tom Cruise film Top Gun. They followed with 1986's Bob Ezrin-produced Count Three & Pray, which peaked at No. 61.
In 1987 Nunn pursued a solo careerand released her debut album, Moment Of Truth, in 1992. Berlin reunited in 1999 with a string of concerts, resulting in the 2000 live album Berlin Live: Sacred And Profane and 2002's Voyeur. With the current lineup featuring guitarist Carlton Bost, Nunn, drummer Chris Olivas, and keyboardist Dave Schulz, on Sept. 17 Berlin released Animal, their first album in eight years. The album features 12 tracks, including a cover of Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody To Love." Berlin are currently on tour throughout the United States, with select dates scheduled through March.
