Jono Grant and Paavo Siljamäki discuss Miami's amazing international scene, the excitement of playing Ultra, and the genesis of their 'Acoustic' project

A DJ trio nominated for Best Dance Recording at the 58th GRAMMY Awards, for 2015's "We're All We Need," Above & Beyond's album Common Ground reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 shortly after its release in January. Backstage at Ultra in Miami, we spoke with DJs Jono Grant and Paavo Siljamäki from the group about the Common Ground tour that followed, the eclectic Miami scene, and the makings of their 2014 project, Acoustic.

Above & Beyond: Common Ground Tour & Miami

As trance and EDM have grown to a next level, Grant and Siljamäki discussed the international and intense scene that has developed around Ultra. "It's a real honor to be able to first of all, have so many people turn up there," said Siljamäki, "but also to have a lineup like we had with such talented people." He also shared that about 14 people from their London office were in Miami with them to party and enjoy the 2018 Ultra scene.

As we noted in our Miami episode of On Location, few cities take such pride in being international. "So you get not just Americans, not just English people, but you get the whole world coming here," Grant expanded on the Miami scene. "A lot of South Americans come up for this week, so it's a really good opportunity to play to a really wide audience."

On Jan. 23, Las Vegas' Palms Casino Resort announced artists with upcoming residencies, including Cardi B, booked for its Kaos nightclub and day club, part of the casino's $690 million redesign. Other artists with Kaos residencies include Above & Beyond, G-Eazy, Kaskade, and Skrillex.

The Palms Casino Resort's extensive redesign includes multimillion-dollar artworks by Damien Hirst, a rotating 360-degree DJ booth at Kaos, and other high-concept revamps dramatized by the casino's From Dust To Gold ad campaign. Judging from the artists selected for these Kaos residencies, the resort's effort to score contemporary relevance seems to be succeeding.

Above & Beyond and Kaskade are both nominated for the 61st GRAMMY Awards. Above & Beyond's "Northern Soul" is up for Best Dance Recording, from their 2018 album Common Ground. Kaskade's remix of Kygo's "Stargazing" is in contention for Best Remixed Recording. Cardi B's 2018 debut album Invasion Of Privacy has been nominated for both Album Of The Year and Best Rap Album. It's single "I Like It" is nominated for Record Of The Year, "Be Careful" is up for Best Rap Performance, and her featured appearance on Maroon 5's "Girls Like You" also received a nomination for Best Pop/Duo Performance.

Kaos is set to open its doors in April, and tickets for select dates are now available.

Performing rights organization ASCAP announced on Dec. 18 that it is donating to MusiCares to support music's creators including those "affected by the recent wildfires in northern and southern California" needing help with food, shelter and replacement of instruments or equipment.

"We are truly grateful for the support and ongoing partnership of ASCAP," said Recording Academy and MusiCares President/CEO Neil Portnow. "Their work on behalf of music people is vital, and their generosity to the music community is equally strong. This donation demonstrates how the music industry works together to take care of their own."

"We have all been stunned by the devastation caused by the California fires and the heartache and loss suffered by our members who reside there," said ASCAP Chairman of the Board and President Paul Williams, winner of three GRAMMY awards as a songwriter. "ASCAP has always been an advocate for music creators, and faced with these terrible circumstances, we have their backs. We are pleased to work with MusiCares to get help to those who need it most."

Members may make disaster relief requests by contacting MusiCares toll-free at 1.800.687.4227.

For those wishing to donate, the "Gift Designation" choice at MusiCares' donation page offers "Disaster Relief" as a selection.

"The music community knows that it can turn to MusiCares in times of distress," said ASCAP CEO Elizabeth Matthews. "They have the organization and the infrastructure necessary to respond to these horrible events and help members of the music community in times of need. We're glad to work with MusiCares once again to ensure that our funds reach the people most affected by the fires."

Artist signatories of the Music4EU petition join major UK music organizations, executives, managers, event organizers and more
Philip Merrill

Dec 12, 2018 - 3:35 pm

On Dec. 11 the UK organization Music4EU launched its petition and signature drive uniting leading British artists, executives and music community organizations to oppose Brexit, Britain's plan to exit the European Union. Billy Bragg, Paloma Faith, Chrissie Hynde, Annie Lennox, Pink Floyd's Nick Mason, and Nadine Shah are just a few among the many British artists who endorse the petition's statement, "Brexit represents a significant threat to the UK's music industry."

Exit from the EU was chosen by British referendum in 2016, but the problem with Brexit is the lack of details in the plan, and also the complexity of EU regulations that have harmonized systems such as travel and taxation, making life more convenient. Negotiations between UK Prime Minister Theresa May and the EU have not resolved the need for agreed details governing an orderly departure.

As a result, the Music4EU petition's signatories believe, "Leaving the EU’s customs union, single market, VAT [taxation] area and regulatory framework (in whole or part) could devastate our global market leadership, and damage our freedom to trade, tour and to promote our artists and our works."

— Music4EU (@Music4EU) December 11, 2018

Music organizations endorsing the petition's warning include the Association of Independent Music; British Academy of Songwriters, Composers & Authors; Featured Artist Coalition; Music Managers Forum; Music Producers Guild; and the Musicians Union. Rolling Stone has a useful summary, but the petition itself and its growing list of endorsements conveys its own special character.

"It is critical to find a way out of this mess," the petition concludes. "Therefore we ask you to examine alternative options to maintain our current influence and freedom to trade."
