5 Questions With ... Maroon 5
GRAMMY-winning rock band Maroon 5 were featured in a recent installment of The Recording Academy's 5 Questions With … series during a GRAMMY Camp — SoundCheck in Nashville. The quintet discussed their advice for aspiring musicians, tips for promoting one's music, songwriting, and collaborating with producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange, among other topics.
"[Our] songwriting process is all over the place," said frontman Adam Levine. "It can be a chord progression Jessie [Carmichael] writes or a guitar riff that James [Valentine] writes, or a melody that is in my head. It can come from anywhere [at] anytime from any instrument. We don't like to keep it formulaic. We like to mix it up as much as possible."
Born out of the '90s alternative rock band Kara's Flowers, Maroon 5 consists of Jesse Carmichael (keyboards), Matt Flynn (drums), Levine (vocals), Mickey Madden (bass), and James Valentine (guitar). In 2002 Maroon 5 released their debut album, Songs About Jane, showcasing their hybrid sound fusing rock, pop and neo-soul textures. The album peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200, aided by the Top 10 hits "This Love" and "She Will Be Loved." The band picked up their first GRAMMY in 2004, winning the prestigious Best New Artist honor. A year later, "This Love" netted Maroon 5 a GRAMMY for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals. The quintet resurfaced in 2007 for their sophomore effort, It Won't Be Soon Before Long. The album climbed to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and spawned the No. 1 hit "Makes Me Wonder," a song earning Maroon 5 their third GRAMMY for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals.
Maroon 5's most recent album, 2010's Hands All Over, was produced by four-time GRAMMY-winning producer Lange. The album peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Their recent single, "Moves Like Jagger" featuring fellow Best New Artist winner Christina Aguilera, hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Maroon 5 is now on tour with dates scheduled in the United States, Canada and Europe.
