(The Recording Academy has formed the GRAMMY Glam Squad, a diverse group of online influencers who will lead the discussion on beauty, fashion and lifestyle during GRAMMY Week in February 2012. The squad will provide exclusive VIP access to select events, including the highly anticipated red carpet for the 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards. Stay tuned here for more tips on how to be inspired, be connected and be noticed.)
Some will assert that the moment of their conjoining was a time long ago, perhaps with medieval minstrels. Others believe the romance was cemented in a club nestled on a midtown street in Manhattan, N.Y. — Studio 54. Still, others think the relationship became official when Pharrell Williams began collaborating with Louis Vuitton or when Jessica Simpson added footwear designer to her running list of roles.
The exact date of the marriage is debatable, but the relationship is undeniable. Music is fashion.
On the heels of the nominations announcement for the 54th GRAMMY Awards on Nov. 30, anticipation is rising among music and style lovers alike. And with good reason. As performers, producers and entourages prepare to strut the fiery-hued aisle leading into Staples Center on Feb. 12, 2012, fashion (and music) will say, "I do." If the styles of the performers who earned the most nominations are any indication of what's to come, I'm predicting that a cacophony of diverse fashion statements will be made.
Leading the field with seven nominations, rapper Kanye West is as revered in fashion circles as he is in performance arenas. Whether taking the stage at the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards (considered the GRAMMYs of fashion), perched front-row at London Fashion week or debuting his fashion line (DW by Kanye West) at Paris Fashion Week, West usually brings a style that is brazen and bold. I'm optimistic that his presence at the 54th GRAMMYs will be tailored, fresh and clean with subtle elements of bling yielding a look fit for a prince...or king.
Fresh-faced beauty Adele is up for six nominations. The 23-year-old breakthrough talent has made power moves since her debut in 2008. Power move No. 1? The sultry songstress stands at 5'9" barefoot, but rocks heels and teased hair, adding at least three inches of height to either end of her frame. No. 2? Confident about what complements her feminine figure, Adele prefers lady-like frocks that are deep in color and rich in texture — think French lace, sequin and crushed velvet. No. 3? A girl after my own heart, her affinity for flawless skin, soft lips and dramatic eyelids and sexy lashes prove Adele has it. Adele will be one of the evening's shining stars with a look that's alluring and feminine yet refined so as to let her voice (which she's currently nursing after surgery) speak for itself.
An out-of-this-world quality (and it's not just because of his name) emanates from fellow six-time nominee Bruno Mars. Could it be his clear appreciation for both rock and pop legends alike and his ability to seemingly channel them all at once? Is it his classic, laid-back-tee-wearing, I'm-so-cool swagger? Or is it the hair: architectural, grand and perfectly coiffed? While I don't think he'll show up to the carpet cocooned in an egg or in hair-to-toe leopard-print, Mars is a performer who will use the red carpet to highlight creativity and theatrics.
With West, Adele and Mars among the leaders of the GRAMMY fashion pack, let the glam ceremony begin! I'll be there ready to chat about the regal and sartorial, the crazy-sexy-cool and indiscriminately over-the-top designs. Please do me the honor of joining me on that fateful day: Feb. 12, 2012.
