Recording Academy To Host Social Media Summit

Panel of major social media leaders will examine their impact on music

The Recording Academy will host a panel discussion featuring a number of top leaders in the social media field who will examine how their industry has created significant shifts in how musicians and fans interact on Jan. 29 at the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles.

The Social Media Rock Star panel will focus on the evolution of social media and how it has radically changed the way music fans discover, share and consume news and information about their favorite artists; how these new platforms have quickly become a driving force for music as musicians more fully embrace it to distribute content, interact with fans, and build their brands; and the importance of communicating and promoting exclusive experiences on these networks. The participants will also look at the challenges that are unique to celebrity users of social media.

Panelists will include Jay Adelson, CEO of Digg; Pete Cashmore, CEO/founder of Mashable; Nikhil Chandhok, senior project manager for YouTube Music & Live; and a GRAMMY-nominated rock artist to be announced. The panel will be moderated by one of mainstream media's early proponents of social media, CNN news anchor Rick Sanchez, along with Marian Merritt, Internet safety advocate at Symantec.

As a follow up to the panel program, on GRAMMY Sunday, leaders of a number of social media platforms will attend the 52nd Annual GRAMMY Awards where they will walk the red carpet in recognition of their influence and impact on music and pop culture. These participants will include Cashmore; MySpace Music President Courtney Holt; YouTube co-founder Chad Hurley; Digg founder Kevin Rose; Twitter founders Evan Williams and Biz Stone; and Tumblr founder David Karp.

The summit was inspired by the fact that, for the first time in its history, The Recording Academy is building much of its 52nd GRAMMY Awards media campaign around digital and social media platforms. The organization launched a FanBuzz Visualizer (a real-time barometer of GRAMMY-nominated artists with the most social media buzz) and has spearheaded its telecast awareness with the ”We’re All Fans” campaign — which harnesses the power of social media and its unique ability to directly connect fans and artists.

The 52nd GRAMMY Awards will take place live on Sunday, Jan. 31 at Staples Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast in HDTV and 5.1 Surround Sound on the CBS Television Network from 8–11:30 p.m. (ET/PT). The show also will be supported on radio via Westwood One worldwide, and covered online at GRAMMY.com and CBS.com, and on YouTube.
