The digital music revolution has reached a turning point. Apple’s iTunes Store will be 10 years old in April, 2013. The technologies underlying digital sound go back substantially further: the first commercial recordings using the PCM digital format were made in the early 1970s; the Compact Disc debuted in 1982; Pro Tools, the most popular professional digital recording system, came along in 1991.

Throughout this time, digital music captured consumers’ imaginations with its remarkable combination of novelty and convenience -- the CD’s random-track accessibility, the ability to carry thousands of mp3 files on a device the size of a palm.

Now, digital music is poised to reach the next level. In addition to coolness and convenience, quality of sound has become the new frontier in digital music. File formats can now accommodate the 96-kHz/24-bit dimensions of full-bandwidth recordings. Earphones with much broader frequency response than the earbuds that defined listening to digital music for the last 15 years now allow the full dynamic range of music to be experienced, as do a growing array of consumer electronics products aimed at enhancing the sonic quality of the digital music experience that are both accessible and affordable.
