GRAMMY-nominated producer Just Blaze was among the participants at the recent GRAMMY GPS: A Road Map For Today's Music Pro hosted by The Recording Academy Atlanta Chapter. During the event, Just Blaze participated in an exclusive interview with GRAMMY.com and discussed his production philosophy, favorite studio gear and biggest career moments, among other topics.
"My favorite pieces of gear in the studio are my ears," said Just Blaze. "If you don't have those, nothing else matters. The gear is interchangeable. I always tell people it's not the machine [or] the instrument … it's the person behind it."
Born Justin Smith in New Jersey, Just Blaze has collaborated with a stable of Roc-A-Fella Records rappers, including Jay-Z and Kanye West. Additional artists he's collaborated with include Busta Rhymes, DMX, Eminem, Jadakiss, and Fabolous. He has earned five GRAMMY nominations to date, including four for Album Of The Year as a credited producer on Nelly's Nellyville, Usher's Confessions, West's Late Registration, and Eminem's Recovery. Just Blaze is also the CEO of Fort Knocks Entertainment, a Miami-based hip-hop/R&B record label. His most recent work includes collaborations with Marsha Ambrosius, Drake and Madonna.
