Jan Smith Is Atlanta's Secret Vocal Sauce

Atlanta-based vocal coach discusses her lifelong love affair with music

Vocal coach/vocal producer Jan Smith was among the participants at the recent GRAMMY GPS: A Road Map For Today's Music Pro hosted by The Recording Academy Atlanta Chapter. During the event, Smith participated in an exclusive interview with GRAMMY.com, discussing her career journey.

"I love music [and] I love to sing. I could sing before I could talk," said Smith. "I always heard in color, I could always sing harmonies. I always heard dimensional placement of instruments in mixes. … It's been a lifelong process. [Music is] a love affair for me."

Described by artist manager Scooter Braun as "the secret sauce," Atlanta native Smith has worked as a vocal coach formore than 4,000 students during her 20-plus-year career. Her clients have included artists such as the Band Perry, Justin Bieber and Collective Soul, and GRAMMY winners Colbie Caillat, India.Arie, Sugarland, Rob Thomas, and Usher, among others. Smith operates Jan Smith Studios, a digital recording and production facility that also offers instruction for voice, guitar, bass, and music theory. Smith has been a member of The Recording Academy for more than 25 years, including service as an Atlanta Chapter Trustee.
