GRAMMY-nominated country singer/songwriter Brandy Clark recently performed her single "Stripes" at The Recording Academy Nashville Chapter GRAMMY Block Party, which also featured performances by Jim Lauderdale, Martina McBride, Kacey Musgraves and Chris Young, among others. Following her set, Clark participated in an exclusive GRAMMY.com interview, discussing the recording of her debut album, 2013's 12 Stories, and what drives her to write songs, among other topics.

"I have to write songs," said Clark. "I think that some people are just born with something they have to get out, via words or music. I'm one of those [people]. I'm always trying to write something that will move people."

Born in Morton, Wash., Clark began playing guitar and writing songs at age 9. In 1998 she relocated to Nashville, Tenn., where she concentrated on songwriting and studied music business at Belmont University. With her songwriting partner, GRAMMY winner Shane McAnally, Clark co-penned songs for the likes of Reba McEntire, Ashton Shepherd, LeAnn Rimes, and Miranda Lambert, whose "Mama's Broken Heart" became a Top 20 hit and earned Clark her first GRAMMY nomination for 2013 for Best Country Song along with co-writers McAnally and Musgraves. Clark launched her solo career in 2012 when she opened on tour for GRAMMY winner Sheryl Crow and made her debut on the Grand Ole Opry stage. After independently releasing a self-titled three-track EP in 2012, Clark followed with her first full-length album, 12 Stories. Featuring 12 tracks written or co-written by Clark, including seven with McAnally, the album peaked in the Top 25 on Billboard's Country Albums chart. Earlier this year Clark was named Breakthrough Artist of the Year by MusicRow Magazine.

On July 8 GRAMMY winner Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland released her latest single "His Hands," which features Clark. Clark is currently on tour with Nettles, with dates scheduled through September.
