Album: The Suburbs (iTunes>)

Artist: Arcade Fire

Won for: Album Of The Year

Previous wins: None

Did you know?: Canadian band Arcade Fire made their first GRAMMY win a memorable one, taking Album Of The Year against such competition as Eminem, Lady Antebellum, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry. The group formed when founding members Win Butler and RĂ©gine Chassagne, now married, met when the latter was singing jazz standards at a Montreal art exhibit. Since then, the group has added numerous members, including Butler's brother William. The two Butlers are the grandsons of guitarist and big band leader Alvino Rey. The Suburbs is the band's third album, and it hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The group performed with David Bowie at a Fashion Rocks event in New York on Sept. 8, 2005. The performance was later released on a live EP. A live YouTube webcast of one of the band's Madison Square Garden shows in August 2010 was directed by former Monty Python member, filmmaker and self-proclaimed Arcade Fire "groupie," Terry Gilliam. Proceeds from the licensing of their song "Wake Up" for Super Bowl XLIV were donated to Haitian earthquake relief efforts. The group garnered three previous GRAMMY nominations, including Best Alternative Music Album for Funeral and Neon Bible in 2005 and 2007, respectively. Arcade Fire performed "Ready To Start" in an impromptu encore at the end of this year's 53rd Annual GRAMMY Awards telecast. The track also appears on the 2011 GRAMMY Nominees album.
