Following yesterday's report on Antonio "L.A." Reid's departure from Island Def Jam Music Group, Barry Weiss has been named chairman and CEO of Island Def Jam and Universal Motown Republic Group, according to a Billboard.biz report. Based in New York, Weiss will oversee Universal Republic, Mercury Records and Universal Motown Records. Prior to joining Universal Music Group, Weiss served as chairman and CEO of the RCA/Jive Label Group. (3/18)

Cloud-Based Streaming To Dominate By 2016
Cloud-based music streaming services are expected to surpass albums and track downloads to become the dominant form of music consumption by 2016, driven by the growing use of smart phones, according to an ABI Research report. Total subscribers to mobile music streaming services will reach 5.9 million by the end of 2011, and subscribers will exceed 161 million by 2016, a compound annual growth rate of nearly 95 percent. The report predicts the Asia-Pacific region will become the market leader in mobile music streaming by 2012. (3/18)
