UK Digital Sales Top Physical in First Quarter
Revenue from digital music sales in the UK reached $134 million in the first quarter of 2012, up 23.6 percent compared to the previous year and accounting for 55.5 percent of UK music revenues, surpassing physical sales for the first time, according to data from UK trade organization BPI. Revenue from physical sales dropped 15.1 percent to $107 million, while digital album sales were the biggest individual source of revenue, up 22.7 percent to $55.6 million. Revenue from subscription services also increased 93 percent to $13.9 million. Overall, the UK recorded music industry grew 2.7 percent to $240 million in the first quarter. (5/31)
