UK Album Sales Down Nearly 15 Percent
Album sales in the UK totaled 23 million units in the first quarter of 2012, down 14.7 percent compared to the same period in 2011, according to data from UK trade organization BPI and the Official Charts Company. Digital album sales increased 19.6 percent to 7.6 million units, accounting for 33.1 percent of all UK album sales, while CDs were down 25.4 percent. Funding For Music Startups Down
Investors contributed $83.75 million to music startups during the first quarter of 2012, down 38.9 percent compared to the $137 million contributed at the same point in 2011, according to a Digital Music News report. Social media platform SoundCloud received the highest amount of investor funding among music startups in the first quarter with $50 million, followed by online concert service Songkick ($10 million) and artist analytics website Next Big Sound ($6.4 million).
