Sony 2Q Revenue Down 11 Percent

reported revenue of $1.33 billion for the second quarter ending Sept. 30, down 11 percent compared to same period in 2008, and operating income of $98 million. Revenue declined 5.2 percent for the first six months of Sony's current fiscal year, while operating income increased 11.4 percent. In related Sony news, the company cut approximately 15 employees, according to Billboard.biz. The layoffs include Colleen Andersen, SVP of business management; Tony Camardo, VP of field sales; and Kevin Twitchell, VP of channel marketing. (11/1)

Android Leads Smart Phone Shipments
Google
's Android accounted for 44 percent of the smart phone market during the third quarter, up from 34 percent from the prior quarter, according to research firm Canalys. Open Handset Alliance, the developers of Android, shipped 9.1 million phones during the quarter, followed by Apple's iPhone (5.5 million) and Research in Motion's BlackBerry (5.1 million). (11/1)

GRAMMY Winners Pick Up Africa Music Awards Nods
GRAMMY winners Eminem and Rihanna, GRAMMY nominee Drake, and rapper Rick Ross garnered nominations in the Best International category for the 2010 MTV Africa Music Awards. Also garnering nominations were Nigerian acts 2 Face, Banky W and P-Square, and South African acts Jozi, JR and Teargas. The awards will take place in Lagos, Nigeria, on Dec. 11. (11/1)
