Online Radio Audience Up 30 Percent
An estimated 76 million listeners in the United States tuned in to online radio stations on a weekly basis in 2011, up 30 percent from the year-ago period and accounting for 29 percent of the U.S. population, according to "The Infinite Dial 2012: Navigating Digital Platforms," a new study conducted by Arbitron Inc. and Edison Research. Additionally, the study found that 17 percent of mobile phone owners streamed online radio in their vehicles, up more than 50 percent compared to the prior year, and 44 percent of the population age 12 and older own a smart phone, while 61 percent own a portable digital media device, including portable MP3 players and tablets. Madonna Records Largest Second-Week Sales Drop
Madonna's MDNA sold 48,000 units in its second week, down 86.7 percent and marking the largest second-week sales drop for a No. 1 debut since Nielsen SoundScan was implemented in 1991. Madonna's sales dip surpasses Lady Gaga's chart-topping Born This Way, which fell 84.27 percent in its second week on the chart in 2011. (4/11)
