Nielsen Reports 2009 Album Sales Trends
A recent Nielsen SoundScan study found that of the 97,751 albums released in 2009, only 12 sold more than 1 million units, down from 2006 (35 albums), 2007 (27) and 2008 (22), and only 2.1 percent of new releases in 2009 sold more than 5,000 units. Total albums released in 2009 were also down from the 105,000 that were released in 2008. However, the average annual sales tally of new releases selling more than 1 million units increased from 1.42 million in 2008 to 1.61 million in 2009. (6/3)

Grand Ole Opry To Reopen In October
The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tenn., is set to reopen Oct. 1 after a $17 million renovation to repair damage from the flood that hit parts of Tennessee, Kentucky and Mississippi in early May. The Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center will reopen on Nov. 15 after renovations to its lobby, three restaurants and 117 guest rooms are complete, bringing the total cost to rebuild the Opry's flooded properties to between $215 million and $225 million. AFTRA, SoundExchange Launch Royalty Distribution Initiative
AFTRA and SoundExchange launched a joint initiative on June 2 to identify and distribute SoundExchange royalties to unregistered AFTRA recording artists. SoundExchange provided a list of more than 6,000 unregistered AFTRA members that are due royalties for recordings played on satellite radio, Internet radio and digital cable services. AFTRA will notify those members via mail, e-mail and direct phone calls. (6/3)
