Music Startups Raise Nearly $440 Million Year-To-Date
Investors contributed an estimated total of $8 million to music startups during September, bringing the year-to-date investor total to $437.8 million, according to a Digital Music News report. Online streaming service Spotify has received the most investor funding for a music startup in 2011 to date with $100 million, followed by music technology company Beyond Oblivion ($77 million) and online ticket retailer Eventbrite ($50 million). Steve Martin Wins Big At Bluegrass Awards
GRAMMY winner Steve Martin And The Steep Canyon Rangers took home the Entertainer of the Year honor at the 2011 International Bluegrass Music Awards on Sept. 29 in Nashville. Other top winners were the Boxcars, who garnered awards for Instrumental Group of the Year and Emerging Artist of the Year, and the Gibson Brothers, who were honored with Vocal Group of the Year and Album of the Year honors for Help My Brother. Newport Festivals Foundation Launches Advisory Board
The Newport Festivals Foundation has launched the Newport Folk Festival Board of Advisors in order to "further advance the dialogue with both established and budding musicians." Board members include the Decemberists' Colin Meloy, GRAMMY winner Ramblin' Jack Elliot, the Low Anthem's Ben Knox Miller, GRAMMY-nominated My Morning Jacket's Jim James, and GRAMMY winner Gillian Welch, all of whom have previously performed at the Newport Folk Festival.
