Music Sales Up For Five Straight Weeks
Album sales for the five-week period ending March 21 totaled 31.95 million units, up 4.5 percent from the corresponding period in 2010, and digital downloads were up 12.7 percent to 130.1 million units, marking the first time since 2004 that music sales have experienced a year-over-year gain of this length, according to Nielsen SoundScan. In 2004 music sales experienced a nine-week increase for the period ending Aug. 15. According to Neilsen, the sales gains can be attributed to catalog album sales (up 10.6 percent), digital album sales (up 23.5 percent) and Internet CD sellers, mail-order and label direct sales (up 19.8 percent). On March 24 Five-time Latin GRAMMY nominee Tito "El Bambino" received the first Songwriter of the Year award at the 19th Annual ASCAP Latin Music Awards, which honors the songwriters and publishers of ASCAP's most performed songs during 2010 in Latin music, in Miami Beach, Fla. GRAMMY and Latin GRAMMY winner Alejandro Sanz was honored with the ASCAP Latin Heritage Award, and Aventura's "Dile Al Amor" was named the Latin Song of the Year. (3/25)
