My name is Liz Burr and I am a social media junkie. It all started 10 years ago when I began writing online. I love to write and so I thought I would memorialize and share my writing online. Through blogging, I've met a lot of people I would have never met any other way. A few years later, as social media began to grow, my love for blogging turned into my love for social media. With the advent of social networking, I had new ways to meet people and communicate with them.
These days, I find myself limiting my exposure on social networks rather than sharing every waking moment of my life. It's a personal choice, so if you're the kind to share every moment — that's OK! And if you're shy about sharing your life online, that's OK too. It's all about finding the right balance for you.
My love for music goes back to when I was a child. My mother used to dance around the house with me to Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. I would later become a member of the choir at church and school, as well as play in my school band from elementary through high school. Some of my friends think it's a bit nerdy to be proud of my (mild) musical accomplishments, but I'm thankful my parents taught me how to appreciate music — as a listener and performer. I suspect this made me a well-rounded person and more adept in other areas of my academic career.
Now that you know my background, I'd like to share with you some of my favorite technology platforms for listening to, discovering and consuming music. Right now, Spotify is my application du jour — I was so happy for its U.S. launch in 2011. I love Spotify because it lets me try out music before purchasing it, and I can send tracks to my friends. I've loved Pandora for a while, and I notice people use it in unique ways. I remember the time I was at a nice restaurant and discovered it was using Pandora to power the music for the restaurant. I love to use Pandora on-the-go, and it works great in the car. While I'm still getting into Google Music (I have a huge music library to sync!), it looks promising and useful. I am always very dedicated to my Last.fm account as it helps me keep track of all my favorite music and provides some interesting data about my listening habits. A hot application I have yet to try is Turntable.fm. My friends call me "DJ Liz," so this application sounds perfect for me. I'll be checking it out soon.
My love for music, technology and social media intersect as I participate in the GRAMMY.com Community Blogger program. This is my third year as the tech blogger for The Recording Academy, and I am excited to be here! Every year, the GRAMMYs outdo themselves with the show and their use of social media, so I know this year will be the best yet!
