has restructured its analysis to include market share breakdown by label ownership, revealing that independent labels collectively accounted for 31.2 percent of album and track equivalent sales during the first six months of 2011, according to a representative of independent association A2IM reported by Digital Music News. Because independent labels often work through major label-owned distribution companies, their releases have been counted toward the major's market share. (8/11)

Franklin To Be Honored At Thelonious Monk Institute Of Jazz
GRAMMY winner Aretha Franklin will receive the Maria Fisher Founder's Award at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz's 25th anniversary celebration on Sept. 12 in Washington, D.C. In addition, the institute will host its 2011 International Jazz Piano Competition in which three pianists will continue on to compete for scholarship prizes and a recording contract with Concord Music Group. Guest judges will include Herbie Hancock, Ellis Marsalis, Jason Moran, and Danilo Perez. (8/11)
