Global Music Sales Fall In 2009
Global recorded music sales declined by approximately 10 percent in 2009, and have fallen 30 percent since 2004, according to an IFPI report. Digital sales increased 12 percent to $4.2 billion, down from a 25 percent increase in 2008, and represented 25 percent of all music sales. Despite digital sales' growth and the availability of more than 400 licensed music services, approximately 95 percent of music downloaded in 2009 was downloaded illegally. (1/21)

"We Are The World" Remake To Benefit Haiti
GRAMMY winners Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie will team with a group of artists for a 25th anniversary music video and re-recording of "We Are The World," with proceeds to be donated to victims of the recent Haiti earthquake. The session will take place following GRAMMY Week on Monday, Feb. 1 at the Nokia Theatre at L.A. Live and will be produced by GRAMMY Awards Executive Producer Ken Ehrlich. Artists confirmed to participate include Natalie Cole, John Legend and Usher, with others to be announced. (1/21)

Apple, Record Labels In Talks For Streaming Service
Apple is negotiating with all four major record labels regarding plans to offer a free streaming music service, which could debut as early as spring, according to a CNET report. The service would allow iTunes users the ability to store copies of their music library on Apple's servers and access songs from any Internet-connected device. Apple acquired digital music retailer/streaming service Lala last December, which is expected to be a component of the new Apple service. According to the report, Apple will announce the service at a Jan. 27 press event. (1/21)

Marks Named New Billboard Editor
Craig Marks has been named the new editor of Billboard and will manage the editorial operations for the print magazine and oversee the company's digital newsletters and Billboard.biz Web site. Marks was formerly the founding editor of Blender and a contributing editor for Rolling Stone, and his writing has been published in GQ and The New York Times. Marks will report to Billboard Editorial Director Bill Werde. (1/21)
