Digital Sales Down In Japan
A total of 334.3 million digital units were sold during the first three quarters of 2010 in Japan, representing a 5 percent drop in volume and a 4 percent decline in value to $779.2 million compared to the same period last year, according to the Record Industry Association of Japan. Sales from Internet downloads reached 36.6 million units, up 5 percent from the same period last year, although revenue was flat. Mobile music sales were down 6 percent, including single-track sales, which were down 2 percent, the first-ever decline during the nine-month period. (11/23)

Spotify Reports 2009 Loss
European music streaming service Spotify reported a net loss of $26.5 million for 2009, according to a report from digital consultancy and analysis company Music Ally. Total revenue for 2009 reached $18 million, with $7.2 million in advertising and $10.9 million in subscription fees. The company ended the year with 7 million European users, including more than 250,000 paid subscribers. (11/23)
