Universal Music Group reported first-quarter revenue of $1.28 billion, up 9.1 percent compared to the same period last year, and earnings before interest, taxes and amortization increased 47 percent to $90.8 million.

Universal Music Group reported first-quarter revenue of $1.28 billion, up 9.1 percent compared to the same period last year, and earnings before interest, taxes and amortization increased 47 percent to $90.8 million. The company attributed the growth to strong releases from Lana Del Rey, Gotye, Madonna, Nicki Minaj, and Van Halen, among others. Additionally, digital sales now account for 39.8 percent of UMG music sales. (5/16)

Warner Music Group reported a first-quarter loss of $36 million, a slightly smaller deficit compared to a loss of $38 million during the year-ago quarter.

Warner Music Group reported a first-quarter loss of $36 million, a slightly smaller deficit compared to a loss of $38 million during the year-ago quarter. Revenue for the first quarter declined 8 percent to $628 million, while digital revenue increased 7 percent to $235 million, representing 37.4 percent of total revenue for the quarter. Music publishing revenue decreased 7 percent to $128 million, and digital publishing revenue decreased 18 percent. (5/15)

GRAMMY-winning cellist Yo-Yo Ma and GRAMMY-winning singer/songwriter Paul Simon are recipients of the 2012 Polar Music Prize, worth $166,000 each, and will be honored at a ceremony in Stockholm on Aug. 28.
