Call Me Maybe

By the time Carly Rae Jepsen turned 25 in 2010, she had established herself as a popular performer in Canada. The British Columbia native was a third-place finalist on "Canadian Idol," and had scored a couple of Canadian gold singles from her debut album, 2008's Tug Of War. However, Jepsen was relatively unknown in the United States, but that changed in a big way in 2012 with Curiosity, an EP that featured the unstoppable breakout hit "Call Me Maybe." The song received an early, crucial push from fellow Canuck Justin Bieber, who tweeted about the song's irresistibility and also posted a homemade video of himself and Selena Gomez lip-synching to the song, helping to launch it as a viral YouTube phenomenon. "Call Me Maybe" was the second best-selling single in 2012, selling approximately 6.5 million copies, and a No. 1 hit in many countries, including the United States and Canada. Jepsen has since toured with Bieber and signed with School Boy Records, a label founded by Bieber's manager Scooter Braun. Her debut album in the United States, Kiss, was released in September 2012, reaching No. 6 on the Billboard 200. The album also contained "Call Me Maybe" as well as "Good Time," a hit duet with Owl City. Jepsen collaborated with a number of high-profile producers on Kiss, including Dallas Austin, Josh Ramsay, and LMFAO's Redfoo. At the 55th GRAMMY Awards, Jepsen stepped into her biggest spotlight yet, with "Call Me Maybe" earning nominations for Song Of The Year and Best Pop Solo Performance.
