Adele didn't reach the pop music radar until 2006, when she toured as an opening act for Jack Peñate. In 2007 BBC Radio latched onto her single "Daydreamer" and she performed on the UK TV show "Later With Jools Holland." It wasn't long before Adele had officially arrived. With a powerful voice, strong singer/songwriter sensibilities and a deal with XL Recordings, Adele released her debut album, 19, which was named after her age at the time of its release, in 2008. The effort put her on the musical map, as did her breakout triumph at the 51st Annual GRAMMY Awards that same year, when she took home honors for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Chasing Pavements." Adele's second album, 21, rocketed her career into the stratosphere. Released in 2011, 21 reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and featured the No. 1 hit "Rolling In The Deep." Adele's momentum was slowed when she was forced to undergo surgery to repair a hemorrhage in her vocal cords in late 2011, but she recovered for her first post-surgery performance at the 54th Annual GRAMMY Awards on Feb. 12, 2012. At the 54th GRAMMYs, Adele's 21, which has surpassed sales of 10 million copies, spawned six GRAMMYs, tying the record for the most awards won by an artist in one night and surpassing Amy Winehouse for the most wins by a female British artist in one night.
